Looking for a stable, simple business to start (preferably low investment)

I'm currently working in IT, but between my job and side gigs, I still find it hard to manage my expenses. I've always wanted to run a business — not something flashy, just something stable and realistic — but it’s stayed on paper till now.


Ideally, a business that doesn’t need a massive upfront investment (bank loan is okay if needed) and is easier to start without needing a big team.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Freelance IT/web dev — work is unpredictable and the market is overcrowded.

  • Food stall — failed due to unreliable staff and operational issues.

Ideas I’m considering:

  • Franchise of something simple and known

  • Becoming a dealer or middleman for construction materials or auto parts

  • Creating and selling ready-to-use business apps or tools, instead of hunting freelance projects.

Would love to hear practical ideas or suggestions based on your own experience.

Once you've locked in a budget and know your preferred business model (retail, wholesale, service, etc.), it becomes easier to shortlist suitable options. Your base city — whether Tier 1, 2, 3, or metro — also affects what's viable.

Assuming a budget between ₹5–15 lakh and that you’re open to renting a shop, here are some options:

  • Retail (Products):Essential stores like Kirana, undergarment shops, small paint stores, or even medical stores (requires a license) can offer stable returns.

  • Wholesale/Distributorship:You could get into FMCG distribution (snacks, beverages, personal care). Think Haldiram's snacks, local chocolates, or daily-use goods.

  • Service Models:Consider niche service gaps — like elderly assistance, hyperlocal delivery, or services for influencers (video editing, gifting, etc.).

  • eCommerce (D2C):Launch on Amazon, Instagram, or Shopify. Categories like fashion, home decor, and lifestyle goods are always in demand.

  • Micro-Industry:You can set up a small packaging or box-making unit — packaging demand is growing with eCommerce.
